Garbage: A Perennial Problem Garbage is a messy problem that always challenges city administrators, and there is a never-ending hunt for solutions to this dilemma. The difficulty is in not only managing a city’s waste, but in doing it in a manner that is environmentally safe and responsible. The usual form of a city’s garbage is solid, municipal waste, the familiar detritus of day-to-day living. However, there are other types of waste that are not as easy to dispose of and require more care in handling. These include the chemicals that are the by-products of manufacturing processes; used syringes, soiled bandages, and other bio-medical wastes of hospitals; fluorescent lighting tubes from homes and offices; and other types of hazardous materials. All these various kinds of trash are usually just hauled to suburban or countryside dumpsites, where they pose health concerns to the local community. If sent to any of the existing treatment plants, these wastes are burned, polluting the environment. Cleanway: The Solution Enter The Herma Group. As a responsible corporate citizen, it decided to address environmental issues and tackle the garbage problem head-on; thus, it established Cleanway Technology Corporation (CTC) in 2001. CTC is the first and only integrated industrial, bio-medical, and hazardous waste treatment facility in the country. Using environmentally safe, state-of-the-art technology, it is at present the best and safest solution to the hazardous waste problem. The facility is located at the Meridian Industrial Complex in Bgy. Maguyam, Silang, Cavite, where it is easily accessible by land and water routes by institutions in the NCR, Calabarzon, and nearby areas. The integrated Treatment, Storage, and Disposal (TSD) facility has its own double-lined, secure landfill which will be the repository of the treated, solidified waste. CTC also has facilities for physico-chemical treatment; solvent recovery; solidification and stabilization; and steam sterilization of medical wastes using the advanced Hydroclave system. “Non-Burn” Tech: Safe and Efficient The Hydroclave system from Canada uses the “non-burn” technology of steam to safely and efficiently treat wastes produced by hospitals, medical laboratories, and clinics. It is touted by environmentalists worldwide as the most suitable technology to address the burgeoning medical waste disposal problem. While other treaters use incinerators to burn wastes, this old-fashioned “burn” method pollutes the air and water. CTC, in order to fulfill its mandate of responsible environmental advocacy, acquired the Hydroclave technology for all its obvious benefits, and because it complies fully with the recently passed “Clean Air Act” (DENR Administrative Order 2000-81). CTC: Setting New Standards CTC had its blessing ceremony last 28 September 2004, and will be fully operational in May 2005. Its formal inauguration will take place then, with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo invited to be the guest of honor. CTC’s vision is to set new standards in the hazardous waste treatment industry and provide a safer, cleaner environment as a legacy for the future. With CTC, the perennial garbage problem may finally be solved – and be a thing of the past. Contact CLEANWAY TECHNOLOGY CORPORATION
