The health sector generates a significant volume of waste that must be disposed of safely
Research shows that the CO and CO2 emission produced by the incineration of immunization hospital waste is much higher than treatment using autoclave technology. Also, the incineration process is more expensive to operate. Alternatives to incineration for healthcare waste treatment are recommended to strongly reduce the emission of dioxins and furans required by the Stockholm Convention, and the World Health Organization has called for the phasing-out of incineration as a long-term strategy.
